1. What is the duties of Electrical Engineer on board ship ?
The general duties of electrical engineer or Electro-technical officer are:
• He is responsible for maintenance of all the electrical motors on ship i.e. in engine room and on deck.
• He is in charge of maintenance of all switchboard including main switchboard, emergency switchboard, battery charge & discharge board and other power distribution board.
• He is responsible for maintenance of fire detectors and fire alarm system.
• He has to maintain all the ship’s alarm system.
• He is responsible for the electronic system fitted onboard ship.
• He is responsible for the ship’s navigational lights and other navigational equipments.
• He is responsible for all the batteries that are connected to machineries onboard. It includes:
• He is responsible for maintaining refrigeration unit in the engine room
• He has to take care of air conditioning unit of the vessel.
• Electrical officer is responsible for maintaining refrigerated containers carried on container ship.
• He is responsible for cargo and engine room cranes electrical system.
• He has to carry out routine maintenance for main engine alarms and trips along with the chief engineer.
• During the time of manoeuvring, he has to be present in the engine room along with other
engineers to tackle any kind of electrical and other emergencies.
• Electrical officer can assist in watch keeping routines at desired time by the chief engineer.
• He has to assist ship’s engineer and deck officer in all kind of electrical problems.
2. What do you do first when on board ship?
Electrical Engineer on board ship is usually independent operation. The first step when on board ship:
• Receive all the transfer from former Electrical Engineer carefully:
• Familirise all essential eletrical systems soon:
• Try to check and test all systems for the specification systems condition
3. Names and the special alarms, protections of some esstial systems onboard ship?
Main engine, boiler, incinerator, 15ppm, bilge well, freshwater generator, E/R mist fire fighting, Co2 release, E/R general alarm, internal comunication systems, General alarm system, figo, centre main air condition unit, cargo crane, auto pilot, …
• Main Engine:
• Diesel – Generator
• Boiler
• Steering gear:
4. What are the basic electrical tools?
• Multimeter
• Clamp meter
• Megger tester
• Power detector
• Screwdriver with insulator handle: small, medium and big size with both flat and phillip head • Plies with insulator handle: normal, Cutting, needle nose
• Insulator tape
• Electric zinc welder
• Knife
5. What should you do in black out situation?
Main generator fail:
- If there is other main generator standby
• Open the MCB of the suppling generator and close MCB of the standby generator.
• Start the essential systems
• Turn off the fail generator for repairing or maintanance
- There is other main generator standby, the emergency generator operating automatically:
• Monitor and control the main switchboard and emergency switchboard:
• Start the essential systems
• Monitor and control the emergency switchboard power
• Find out the cause of black out situation, assistance the Engineers start the Diesel
generator if necessary
• Supply the power to main switchboard as soon as possible, start other systems.
• Repair , maintenance, report…
• If the emergency generator does not operating: check the starting condition and manual start emergency generator, supply to emergency swichboard, then following the above situation
Main switchboard fail: Do not try to switch on the main generator, allow the emergency generator above. Solve the problem in main switchboard before close the main generator MCB
